You can think of FDN practitioners as “health detectives” that uncover root causes of dysfunction in the body. Rather than simply chasing symptoms in an endless cycle of trial and error, an FDN-P will help you to understand why those symptoms are happening in the first place. While an FDN-P is assigned to your “case”, he/she will work tirelessly, spending hours of research to connect the dots between your lab work, health timeline, and symptom history.
FDN-Ps use functional lab work to identify healing opportunities. In doing so, we aim to restore the body to normal function without having to “diagnose” or “treat”. Ultimately, the goal of the FDN-P is to guide their clients through customized diet and lifestyle programs so that they may learn to remain healthy for a lifetime.

At Kaywell, our approach is centered on uncovering and addressing the root causes of imbalances in the body, rather than diagnosing or treating specific diseases. This holistic perspective allows us to effectively support a diverse range of conditions. We have seen positive outcomes with clients dealing with autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto’s, and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as hormone-related issues like hypothyroidism and PCOS. Additionally, we assist with gut health concerns including IBD and IBS, mold illness, Lyme disease, and more. Our goal is to restore the body’s natural balance and promote overall health and well-being.

The timeline for seeing results while working with a functional nutritional practitioner can vary widely depending on several factors, including the complexity of your health issues, your current health status, and how diligently you follow the recommended protocols. Some people may start to notice improvements within a few weeks, while for others, it may take several months to experience significant changes.
At Kaywell we have a holistic approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just managing symptoms. This process often involves a detailed assessment, personalized recommendations, and ongoing adjustments to your plan based on your progress. Patience and commitment to the process are key, as the goal is to achieve lasting, sustainable results rather than quick fixes.
Working with an FDN-P does not guarantee results; however, there are reasonable expectations that symptoms will resolve as you begin to untangle the web of root causes contributing to your symptoms.

In most cases, functional lab assessments are considered alternative medicine, and are not covered under insurance. As a health consultant, I don’t provide insurance billing services of any kind, though you may request statements from Kaywell which may be submitted to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. In many cases, lab fees can be paid for up front with a Health Savings Account (HSA). In fact, I have paid for many of my own lab fees this way.
Some clients have successfully submitted statements for reimbursement for out-of-pocket medical expenses, especially when submitting to a Health Savings Account. It should be noted that practitioners who sign insurance company contracts often discover that they can’t deliver optimum care. Instead, care is rationed. Patients must be dismissed before they are fully healed. Many necessary services aren’t even covered, especially in the area of prevention, nutrition and functional lab testing. Limiting care is profitable for the insurance company, but it ultimately compromises the patient’s well-being. Your health is your most valuable possession. You are worth being healthy. I urge you not let the costs of functional care get in the way of healing and living your best life.

Absolutely! Many people turn to Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioners (FDN-Ps) as a last resort after exhausting various fad diets, healing modalities, and exercise routines without success. Often, they are facing multiple layers of dysfunction within the body that remain hidden and unaddressed. Issues like hormone imbalances, mitochondrial dysfunction, or gut infections can prevent symptom-free living until they are properly identified and managed. While nutrition plays a vital role in any healing protocol, it is just one component of a broader, holistic approach to achieving comprehensive health.

Your body is designed to operate at its full potential, and the functional approach ensures it performs at its best. Whether you’re dealing with fatigue, depression, or unexplained weight gain, this approach views symptoms not as the problem themselves, but as indicators of underlying issues. Many people spend years in a cycle of trial and error trying to manage these symptoms, often without success. Instead of merely masking symptoms, the functional approach focuses on uncovering and addressing the root causes of hidden stress within the body, aiming to restore true health and vitality.

We do not replace your medical doctor. Instead, we recommend collaborating with your primary care provider for regular check-ups and any necessary prescription medications. Our aim is to complement your existing care by focusing on identifying and addressing the root causes of your symptoms, while your doctor handles immediate concerns. Together, we provide a comprehensive approach to your health and well-being.
